HEAD COACH - KYLIE LOUW

Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Kylie Louw enters her 1st year as the NAU Head Soccer Coach. She comes to NAU with a wealth of knowledge and experience. She served as NAU's assistant coach for 2 years and the assistant women's soccer coach at the University of Arizona for 4 years and is currently in her 3rd year at Northern Arizona University.
Louw graduated from Tuks Combined School in Pretoria, South Africa in 2006 where she started as a striker on her high school team and was honored as the Player of the Year and Coaches' Player of the Year her senior season. Upon graduation, Louw has been a member of the South African National Team where she competed in the 2012 London Olympics. She came to the United States to compete at the Division I level at Stephen F. Austin University (SFA) where she received her Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology in 2012.
At SFA, Louw was a four-year starter who graduated as the school's all-time leader in points with 96 and in assists with 42. In addition, she is sixth all-time in both goals at 27 and shots at 156. Louw helped the Ladyjacks win two Southland Conference regular season titles in 2011 and 2012 and the SLC tournament championship in 2012. She is th eonly player in SFA history to win the Conference player of the year for 3 consecutive years.
Louw joined NAU from the University of Arizona where she helped the Wildcats to the second round of the NCAA tournament during the 2014 and 2017 season and sweet 16 appearance in 2015. In her first season, the Wildcats went 9-7-4, garnering their first winning record since 2005.
Louw is dedicated to the development and exciting environment that the great game of soccer can create for young passionate players. She is passionate, energetic and thrilled to be involved in the brilliant game of soccer.
ASSISTANT COACH - TYLER SCHATZ
Tyler Schatz joins the NAU family after spending the last six seasons with the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams Women’s Soccer Team. Schatz spent his first two years as a graduate assistant with the team as he earned his Master’s in Sport Leadership before becoming a full-time assistant with the program. As an assistant, Schatz’s main responsibilities included working with the team’s goalkeepers, assisting with team film and coordinating team travel. The Rams made it to the Atlantic 10 conference championship each of his last two seasons with the program and the team broke the school record for most wins in a season (16) in 2018.
Head Coach Kylie Louw on Tyler, “We are very excited to be adding Tyler to our staff here in Flagstaff. He has proven himself to be a good goalkeeper coach and brings knowledge of the game that will continue to help our program. He is extremely passionate and positive both on and off the field and will help us grow in the direction we want to go.”
Prior to his time at VCU, Schatz played Kenyon College where he helped lead the program to their first NCAA tournament (2010) since the early 1990s. He is still currently ranked in the top three for goals against average for a single season and career at Kenyon while earning his degree in History and Statistics. After graduating from Kenyon, Schatz moved to Spain where he played in the professional ranks for one year with Club Deportivo de Cieza.
Schatz currently holds his USSF C license as well as United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Goalkeeper Diploma and resides in Flagstaff.
ASSITANT COACH - ALAN BERRIOS
Coach Berrios joins the NAU staff after serving as the assistant coach\recruiting coordinator at Dixie State University in 2018. During his time at DSU, he helped guide the program to the RMAC Conference Tournament making it to the conference semi-final before bowing out to conference tournament champions Colorado School of Mines. During his time at DSU, he was in charge of recruiting as well as the defensive group.
Head Coach Kylie Louw on Alan “We are extremely excited to be adding Alan to our staff. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge from several different institutions and levels. We are excited to add someone who has had head coaching experience and has been around the college game for many years. Alan has a very good hold of the region in terms of recruiting and we believe his experience on the west coast as well as the east coast will help us expand our recruiting efforts. Alan will also play a key role on the defensive side of the game.”
Prior to his time at DSU, Coach Berrios spent four years as head women's soccer coach at Arizona Christian University. While at ACU, he led the Firestorm to a GSAC playoff appearance in 2017, and is the winningest coach in their program’s history. He also served as director of soccer for both programs(men & Women) at ACU during his first two years at ACU.
Berrios also spent four years as an assistant coach for the University of Tampa women’s soccer team. During his tenure at UT, the NCAA Division II Spartans produced a record of 59-18-12. In 2011, the Spartans won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Regional Championship before bowing out in the NCAA Elite Eight to Armstrong Atlantic.
Tampa won their third straight Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship in 2012 before losing to the eventual national champion West Florida in the NCAA Sweet 16. In 2013, the Spartans were nationally ranked the entire season while rising to as high as number four in the nation in consecutive weeks. After winning 10 straight matches to open the season, Berrios helped the Spartans to five SSC victories as they advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA South Regional.
Before coaching at Tampa, Berrios served as the Director of Soccer Operations for the University of South Florida women’s team for one year. During his only season with the NCAA Division I Bulls, USF highlighted their season with wins over Georgetown and Marquette in the Big East tournament. South Florida advanced to their first ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 beating Auburn before falling to Florida State in the second round.
He has been coaching club for 19years. On the club circuit in Florida, Berrios was a staff coach at Brandon FC/West Florida Flames from 2002–13, Tampa Bay United from 2013-14. In Arizona he spent 2014-16 with the CCV Stars Soccer Club and 2016-18 with RSL-AZ formerly Sereno Soccer Club. Coach Berrios served four years active and two years inactive in the United States Naval Reserve as a Boatswains Mate - Petty Officer 2nd class.
Berrios is a USSF and NSCAA/United Soccer Coaches Licensed Coach and played collegiately at Bergen County Community College. Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. Coach Berrios and his wife Suzi have four children and reside in Munds Park, AZ as well as Phoenix, AZ.
